Ivy Hill Volunteer Receives Congressional Award

PERKASIE: Sophia Boquist, 9th grader at Unami Middle School student and Doylestown resident, received the Congressional Award Bronze Medal on December 21, 2016, by Congressman Mike Fitzpatrick in his Lansdale office.

Sophia has been a dedicated volunteer at Ivy Hill Therapeutic Equestrian Center in Perkasie since October 2015, and has been persistently working through different achievement levels of the award since then. Fitzpatrick recognized Sophia for her efforts in personal development, physical fitness and volunteering in our community.  In addition to her other achievements, Sophia has logged nearly 150 hours volunteering at Ivy Hill. She has completed the requirements for her Silver Medal award and is now working toward the Gold.

In addition to volunteering, Boquist is interested in United States history, is active in Girls Scouts and the co-ed venturing program of the Boy Scouts, plays piano with the Unami String Ensemble and is a member of the C. B. West swim team.

For the Boquist family, volunteering at Ivy Hill is a family affair.  “We are blessed to have Sophia and her family as part of the Ivy Hill family of volunteers,” said Executive Director Donna Carlson.

“Our volunteers are the heart of Ivy Hill and work as a team with our instructors and staff to provide the best care and service to our riders, horses, facility and grounds,” Carlson added.

Sophia’s father is retired U. S. Air Force pilot Col. Rob Boquist, who also is an Ivy Hill volunteer, along with her mother Rebecca, a free-lance copy editor and brother Quinn, a 6th grader at Mill Creek Elementary School and Boy Scout. The family lives in Doylestown with their cat, Scout.

“The whole family is involved in our community through scouting and Ivy Hill,” said Col. Boquist.

“We put into practice the spirit of volunteering to help lift up and improve our whole community,” Boquist added.

The mission of Ivy Hill Foundation is to create therapeutic programs for individuals with cognitive, physical, emotional, behavioral and psychological needs utilizing the equine experience. To volunteer at Ivy Hill, sponsor a horse or a rider at Ivy Hill Therapeutic Equestrian Center, to make a donation or for more information, visit our website at www.ivyhillequestrian.org.
